Fabric: Inspiring Design

We provide a design-driven fabric collection of vibrant hues, textiles, patterns, textures, and finishes that blur the line between indoor and outdoor design.

Raw Elements

Until recently, outdoor fabrics were limited to uninspiring colors, and stiff fabrics that would never be invited indoors. That has changed. New fiber technologies enable outdoor fabrics to be beautiful and comfortable, as well as durable.

Solution-dyed Acrylic
SouthLake and Sunbrella fabrics are primarily American-made from 100% solution-dyed acrylic fibers. Acrylic fibers begin with a liquid acrylic polymer solution. A polymer is a long chemical chain made up of smaller molecules. This liquid is forced through a device called a spinneret, which extrudes long acrylic fibers. Acrylic fibers are then used to make fabric.

To create solution-dyed acrylic fibers, dye is added to the liquid acrylic polymer solution before it is extruded into fibers. As a result, color goes completely through the fiber. In contrast, piece-dyed acrylic fibers are dipped in dye after they are extruded, coloring the outer surface of thread.

Solution dyed fibers maintain color intensity longer and are not faded by sunlight or cleaning solutions. This makes them ideal for outdoor use. Acrylic-fiber fabrics are easy to wash and dry quickly. They are resistant to mildew and they are pleasant to the touch.

Spun Polyester
Spun polyester is made by twisting small polyester staple fibers together to create a long thread, similar to the way in which cotton threads are created from cotton staples. Spun polyester is characterized by many features that make it ideal for high-performance, outdoor use:

  • Smooth Texture: Its fibers are silky, resulting in a smooth texture.
  • Durability: Spun polyester fibers are resistant to shedding and have a high tearing strength. Fabric can easily withstand hundreds of washings while retaining color and softness.
  • Feels like cotton: Spun polyester fabric handles like cotton, folds like cotton and even absorbs like cotton for an outstanding user experience.
  • Wrinkle resistance: Spun polyester fabrics are wrinkle resistant and allergen free.

Manufacturing

TEXSILK® spun polyester fabrics are used in some Seasonal Living collections for cushion covers. TEXSILK colors are solution dyed. They are resistant to cleaning chemicals. TEXSILK is made through an eco-friendly process, where no water is used in the dying process, and it is 100 percent recyclable.

Sustainability

Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are GREENGUARD-certified for low chemical emissions, contributing to healthy indoor air quality. Most Sunbrella upholstery fabrics have been tested in an independent laboratory to verify they do not contain harmful substances according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®.
